Embroidery Designer ~ Teacher
PERSONAL HISTORY
Deborah Forney is an embroidery designer, teacher and owner of Debilyn Designs, which markets her original hand-painted needlepoint canvases. She is Certified with Distinction from the Royal School of Needlework, England. Her embroidery has won awards at; Callaway School of Needlearts, National Academy of Needlearts, Embroiderer's Guild of America and Woodlawn Plantation. She has taught at ANG National Seminar, Callaway School of Needlearts, EGA and ANG guilds and needlepoints shops around the country.
Her designs range from whimsical holiday figures to realistic flowers, animals and architecture. She has produced commissioned designs for individuals, guilds and shops. As a teacher, her focus is on integrating color and design principles to create embroidery as art ~ "regardless of the color scheme or subject matter, all embroidery can rise to the level of art provided the stitcher exercises a little self-control and looks at each line, shape, color and texture as part of a unified visual statement."
Deborah began taking formal needlepoint classes as a teenager while living in Taiwan with her family. It is there that she fell in love with stitching, the Chinese culture and her future husband. Graduating from Georgetown University as a Chinese linguist, Deborah chose to follow her heart instead of her chosen career. She married her high school sweetheart and began an adventure as the wife of a submariner that continues to this day. As a Navy wife, she moves frequently and has enjoyed the many opportunities each duty station has offered ~ especially the two years spent in England where she was able to study at the Royal School of Needlework. Deborah currently lives in Radford, VA, with her husband, Dan, and son, Peter. She is looking forward to a full-time teaching career once the last of her three children leaves the nest for college.
